ALEX EMBERSON – PRACTICE MANAGER

Role and Duties

As Practice Manager I wear many hats.  My work involves everything from processing invoices to implementing the business development project work, and generally keeping things ticking over. Having been with Stortford Grange for two and a half years now, I’ve had the pleasure of working with one of the friendliest and hardest working group of people I’ve ever met, and they all work hard to get you better.

History

I’ve worked in many varied jobs and roles since the age of 18. After A-levels I went to The University of Lincolnshire and Humberside where I studied for a degree in Computer Game design (I know what you’re thinking.) and decided not to pursue this as a career choice due to high competition for jobs in the market and a long time before getting where I wanted to be.

After leaving university, I worked in numerous jobs on a temporary basis. Working in many different areas; everything from shifting office furniture to packing bananas, during which time I learnt the meaning of “graft” and hard work.

During this time I applied for Essex Police and began initial training in 2001/2. After passing out from the Ashford Training Centre I was assigned to Epping and Harlow. Although I enjoyed the time with Essex Police and the constant challenges the job offered, ultimately the job of a police officer requires more than most of us think, and as a result I was in doubt as to whether I’d survive 30+ years of duty. So I left to find something else I’d be good at.

After working for a few firms in London, I applied for a job with Natural England (Formerly the Countryside Agency). I was lucky enough to work on both the transport team and ultimately the National Parks team. Developing a passion for the preservation for the environment, I was lucky enough to help support the Agency’s work on the inquiry into the South Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and its designation to become a National Park.

However, with Civil Service restructuring, (see Lyons Report) meant that my job was being moved from London to Sussex. A move I didn’t want to make. So as Wendy was looking for a new Practice Manager and I was looking for a more challenging job that wasn’t in Sussex, I applied, and here I am.
