INTERFERENTIAL THERAPY (IFT)

Interferential therapy (IFT)  has been the electrotherapy treatment of choice for the last 28 years.

Wendy Emberson was closely involved with the development of the first British designed equipment in the late 1970’s when she was Superintendent Physiotherapist at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London. Since that time she has carried out more than 60,000 treatments where IFT forms an essential component of the overall treatment programme.

Treatment with IFT involves using a current that produces a gentle tingling sensation only and lasts on average 20 - 30 mins. Vulcanised rubber electrodes with foam covers are used to transmit the current into the appropriate part of the body.

We usually use IFT in conjunction with steam packs which serve to reduce the resistance of the skin, as well as increasing the blood supply to the area. The IFT and packs also provide a comforting, relaxing time following any manipulation or other manual therapy. Such relaxation time is an essential part of the treatment and helps to calm both patient and condition!

Some of the conditions that we can treat using IFT

1. Any condition where we want to increase the INFLAMMATORY/HEALING RATE. This includes all soft tissue injuries, arthritis and post trauma and surgery.

2. FRACTURES: The research work was carried out in the mid 1980’s by Prof Lilyana Nikolova. There has been extensive work in this area by other specialist physiotherapists - notably Brian Simpson MCSP in Ipswich.

3. ASTHMA, HAYFEVER, SINUSITIS: Two undergraduate research projects have been carried out at Stortford Grange  demonstrating that IFT is a better broncho-dilator than ventolin.

Physiotherapists have been treating hayfever and sinusitis for many decades using a range of electrotherapies, but we have found that IFT  is the most effective.

4.ONYCHOLYSIS: This is a condition where the nails separate from the nailbed underneath. Current medical treatment is limited in it’s effect, but we have treated 2 patients successfully where the nails returned to normal.

5. CIRCULATORY CONDITIONS: such as Raynaud’s disease, wounds and ulcers. Using IFT on certain frequencies will increase the deep circulation and affect the autonomic control of the blood vessels.

6. IRRITABLE BOWEL, SPASTIC COLON AND COLITIS:

The initial work in this area was carried out at St Mark’s Hospital London, and forms the foundation of our treatments here.

7. SKIN CONDITIONS: Conditions such as psoriasis and acne and eczema may also be helped depending on the severity.
